From the desk of Alison Gibson, Director
Just received this postcard as a gift to the collection. Exceptionally clear, and another one that was for J. O. Arnold, who ran the Red Cross Pharmacy for about a year (1910), so this card was a bit of advertising as well. This is at 3rd and Main.
We decided that a bit of ‘weeding’ was needed leading up to the Ripley Friends of the Library booksale in mid-December. Our computer can run a list of books that haven’t moved in however long you want to go back, and while some of our 70-year-old books still travel, some of the once hot titles/authors have slowed down. The benefits of belonging to a 100-library system consortium is we can check, before we withdraw the title, that there are other libraries that own the item, so we can borrow quickly from them if there is a renewed interest. We tackled the large print section and the paperback collection to make room for new titles. Every time the Friends have a booksale, we have people ask for large print books, so we’ll have some this time, and the batch includes some well-known authors and a mix of genres. We’ve been receiving a quite a few boxes of donated books as well– lots of craft books this past week, especially cross stitch and knitting. Cookbooks have been plentiful, from current trend Instant Pot cookbooks to small regional to the ubiquitous Taste of Home annual titles. Something for everyone. We are also getting some very nice gift-worthy books—stay tuned for more!
Just a reminder, the Ripley Friends of the Library have copies of the new biography on Rev. John Rankin. Released on October 15th, and the author will be up at the Rankin House this coming Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
