LIBRARY TALK – OCTOBER 11, 2024

From the desk of Alison Gibson, Director
Thought a pretty picture of some of Ripley’s lovely historical homes would be fun to see. If you don’t recognize them, just drive slowly up Main Street and you’ll see they still are beautiful and substantial. Several of Ripley’s ‘movers and shakers’ built and lived in these mansions. At least two of the houses had presidents stay as guests. The two most visible houses in this 1912 postcard are firstly the house is built on a knoll known as Silver Point, built by Samuel Hemphill, later owned by Admiral Albert Kautz. The second house was built by Dr. Alexander Dunlap. He moved to Ripley in 1846 and was internationally known for his surgery successes and his dedication and skill in treating many Civil War soldiers.
Last reminder for the upcoming spooky storytelling of Edgar Allan Poe’s tales. The Appalachian Creatives Theatrical Society will be performing in the library annex this Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Perfect for getting into the Halloween spirit! This program is sponsored by the Ripley Friends of the Library and is free to attend.
FYI, our libraries will be closed on Monday, October 14th in observation of Columbus Day and National Indigenous People Day.
