LIBRARY TALK – SEPTEMBER 4, 2025

rom the desk of Alison Gibson, Director
Less than 3 weeks before the Brown County Fair! Back around 1910, exaggerated postcards were pretty popular, and Ripley’s own “Old Reliable” fair used these stock cards as advertisements for their big event. There are collectors of exaggerated cards—cabbages that fill a railroad car, chickens big enough to ride, corn that you need a sawmill to cut and so on.
These cards were for the 1909 fair August 3-6. Looking at the Ripley Bee of the time, there were extra routes from Sardinia on the O. R. & C railroad, the Gillmor Family of acrobatic fame was an attraction, fine horses competed, bands played, merry-go-round ran and lots of exhibits in the floral hall.
Aberdeen Branch Library finally has a new working copier. Our old one had been a workhorse but was at the point parts were not available for repair, and finally no amount of ‘MacGyvering’ worked. We were somewhat frustrated with the length of time from the ordering of new machines to receiving them took, but all behind us now, and hopefully all will be good for many years. Thank you for your patience.
