LIBRARY TALK – AUGUST 21, 2025

From the desk of Alison Gibson, Director
So far, no luck on tracking down the 1820 James Gilliland pamphlet “Dialogue on Slavery’, but we won’t give up hope! In sifting through other documents, we found the document shown, with Gilliland the first name. While it shouldn’t be a surprise that the citizens of Brown County who believed in abolition should support the Cherokee Indians, we hadn’t come across this document before. Not a pretty postcard, but lots of recognizable early names of Ripley and Brown County.
Normally, the Ripley library closes on the Saturday of the Ohio Rural Heritage Festival, but since this year the festival will be reduced in size we plan to be open. Don’t forget—Queen Pageant at the Ripley Elementary School Friday night at 6:30 p.m. and the Bob Groh Memorial Car/Truck/Motorcycle Show Saturday on Main Street—sign-up starting at 8:00 a.m., awards at 1:00 p.m. Main Street will be closed on Saturday.
