From the desk of Alison Gibson, Director
A big thank you to the Ripley Friends of the Library for all the work they did this past week. Setting up for a book sale takes a lot of behind the scenes work, and we had to ‘take down’ pretty quickly as we have other events scheduled for the library annex. Also a thank you for everyone that came to the sale and found bargains—we always like to see the donations as well as weeded titles find a new home.
While postcards are our biggest source of pictures of earlier Ripley, we do have another source of local history via business advertising—matchcovers! At the book sale, one of our browsers mentioned that she remembered the annex when it was the Germann Bros. truck barn…that is going back ‘several’ years. All three businesses shown have been long closed, and in the case of the Hotel Bodmer, the building doesn’t even exist anymore. While the library isn’t a museum per se, we enjoy collecting, keeping and sharing bits of local history. In case you didn’t know, the Ripley Museum is open for the season on Saturdays10-4. Free admission, and if you enjoy the tidbits that we post, you’ll love all of the amazing Ripley artifacts the museum holds. Be it military, business or family histories, they have a lot to look at and enjoy.
The summer reading program is going well—we even had our first reader finish enough hours of reading to earn a t-shirt and the coupon for use at the Ripley Boat Club (Thanks Boat Club for helping encourage reading during the summer!). There is still time to join, and each of our branches have programs for weeks to come—
