LIBRARY TALK – JANUARY 9, 2025

From the desk of Alison Gibson, Director

Another mid-1990s photo showing a part of a building on Main. . Located at the corner of Easton Alley and Main Street, it was the location of Wag’s Antiques. The building is currently under renovation. Long time residents remember the building fondly as the pool hall with the best hamburgers around. (Closed in 1994)

The ‘rest of the picture’ is the charming image of Elga Wilson (better known as Elgee). She was a fixture in Ripley for many years. She was a kind and sharing person, worked for many years at the US Shoe Factory, After retiring, Elgee was a dynamo in recycling–gathering cans throughout town. To read more about her, we recommend looking her up in the Ripley Library newspaper archives on our website www.ripleylibrary.com. The March 28, 1991 Ripley Bee has a nice biography describing her interesting life for her nomination as Citizen of the Year.

Ah, the weather. I guess we don’t appreciate the mild and nearly snow-free weather we’ve had for some time until we get lots of snow and then serious cold. As we write this column, we don’t know what our schedule will be this week, but don’t worry if you have something due on ‘closed’ days—we will change the due dates to next open day. We post on our Facebook if we are planning to be closed. Stay warm!
