LIBRARY TALK – JULY 20, 2024

From the desk of Alison Gibson, Director
As we drive through Brown County, we see a few tobacco fields, although not nearly as many as in years gone by. Thought we’d share some early postcards from our collection, top card postmarked 1910, bottom 1913. We’d like to mention that the Ohio Tobacco Museum is now open on a regular basis—Saturdays from 11-3 and they’ve been working on restoring the building, improving the exhibits and even having a small tobacco patch growing to show how this labor-intensive plant is raised. They also cover how it was a significant agricultural crop for the area as well as the impact of the warehouses and auctions on our area. Museum is located at 703 S. Second Street across from the Maplewood Cemetery.
We want to thank the street crew of the village for trimming the trees on Main Street. Bringing out the bucket truck made the trimming possible, and we are grateful to the crew.
As we wind down the summer reading programs as school days are not that far away, we want to thank all of the parents and guardians for bringing their kids to our libraries. We’ve had a great year so far, and the Ripley library will continue to have programs for kids throughout July that are fun—our art camp for this week filled up quickly. We will be having rock painting next Wednesday (no registration needed) 11:00 am for 3-5 year olds and 1:00 pm for 6-12 year olds. Ron’s horse Bedford will be visiting on Tuesday July 23rd at 11:00 at the Lions Club park (weather prevented his visit last week) Just give us a call at 937-392-4871 or stop in to see what’s going on. Of course, can’t hurt just to come in and grab some books and read for pleasure—as you know, we are always adding new titles weekly, and would love to hear from you what you’d like to see on our shelves.
