From the desk of Alison Gibson, Director
Happy graduations and Memorial Day. Last year we posted our postcards of the Soldier’s Monument (still in the Facebook photo album), so to change up the picture, we are sharing this wonderful postcard. We are fortunate that someone took the time to write some details on the back. This is the 2nd grade of Ripley Elementary with Miss Esther Greenhow as the teacher. “Five of this group started school together and graduated together in 1921-Venetia Williams, Rae Wylie, Helen Corbin, Thelma Clift and George Shafer” Seated Harry Melvin, Buck Heck, Henry Marshall, ?, Ray Smith, George Shafer.
2nd row Venetia Williams, Ray Wylie, Hazel Richards, Helen Corbin, Evelyn Donald, Thema Clift, Lillie Johnson, ?Vernon Hughes, ?, ? Next row Birdie Coffer, Susie May Brown, ?????
For fun, we checked the Ripley Bee to see if they listed who made it to the 50-year mark…13 had graduated in 1921, and 10 were still around in 1971, including: Rae Wylie, the only member who was living in Ripley in 1971, Mrs. Helen Corben Ware, Portsmouth, Mrs. Thelma Clift Tyler, Worthington, Mrs. Thelma Lewis Hinkle, Columbus, Mrs. Venetia Willams Hall, Columbus, Mrs. Mary Henry Heck Purdon, Hackensack, NJ, Mrs. Hazel Fussnecker Spronr, Detroit, Dr. J. Otis Young, Chicago, Mrs. Mildred Lepley Gels, Norwood. Sadly, George Shafer, Rupert Wells and Joe Montgomery were the three that were deceased by 1971.
