LIBRARY TALK – NOVEMBER 28, 2024

From the desk of Alison Gibson, Director
We couldn’t find a fun Thanksgiving picture, and figured everyone would be busy this week, so…just a little history on local businesses. (And look how many for both Ripley and Russellville!) This listing is from a reprint of the1921 R.G. Dun Mercantile Agency Reference Book, so over 100 years ago. The symbols on the left side of the entry represent what trade. The left-hand column on the right side of the entry is the estimated pecuniary strength, with AA being over a million dollars, the righthand column is the rating of general credit. So, for example, Noll Sisters—the triangle represents dry goods, which would be mostly clothes (in this case millinery or hats), K means their pecuniary or monetary value is between $1-2,000.00, and their credit rating is good.
We hope that everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving, and realize that from here on out, the holiday spirit and chaos is upon us. Don’t forget to visit your library, we’re here to say hello, help you choose a book or movie to escape into, fax or scan that missive that needed to get somewhere ‘yesterday’ and so much more.
