From the desk of Alison Gibson, Director
Remember the tractors pulling the shuttles for the Ohio Tobacco Festival? Late into the night you saw and heard them taking people to and from the OTF. This picture was used in the August 20, 1992 Ripley Bee. This was to show off the new 26-foot shuttle, adding to the other 26- and 18-foot shuttles already in use. While the Bee didn’t name the pictured committee members, we’re sure our readers will recognize many of them. Ed and Eddie Fath did much of the shuttling and they are in the front row towards the right. Final reminder that we will be closing the Ripley library at 5:00 p.m. on Friday due to the parade, and will be closed on Saturday during the Ohio Rural Heritage Festival.
We can tell that school has started with the fewer kids in during the day, and that means our Summer Reading Program has ended. We had a great run with lots of kids participating with ‘Old Faithfuls’ as well as many new faces joining us for reading and program fun. We hope that everyone that participated had a good time and we’re sure that the summer participation will help the transition into school reading.
In about a month, the 173rd Brown County Fair will be in full swing. The Friends of the Russellville Library will be giving away 2 fair passes. A ticket for every three items you check out at the Russellville Library is all it takes to be in the running for the passes.
We have seen an uptick in the requests for COVID test kits. Our rules are the same as before—call ahead at any of our three libraries and we will set them out for you in a designated location—we don’t keep or hand them out at the desk. Thanks.

Lastly, with a little research, we found the date of the photograph shared last week of the Proctor K. Smiley with the view of Front and Market Streets–it was taken November 3, 1898.
