LIBRARY TALK – OCTOBER 23, 2025

From the desk of Alison Gibson, Director
Here’s the postcard we promised. You may be familiar with the more common OR&C postcard on the bottom, and quick glance you might not notice the differences unless you had them together, but the top one shows on the right side a part of the building that is next to the annex, the building that the S.O.B.s restored and Dr. Alley was in for many years. In the 1904 Sanborn map, this building was listed as vacant. You can see further back in the ‘yard’ and a few other details that flesh out a bit of the OR&C history. The top postcard was done by Kraemer Art Co for Maddox Drug Co. and has a hand-written date of October 14, 1911.
The covered bridge postcards seemed to be popular, so we’ve purchased some of the set that were ‘missing’ in our collection off eBay, so sometime in the future, we’ll share those as well.
Sunday’s program on the history of showboats was quite interesting—JoAleene Bryant Miranda and her family could easily be considered river royalty, and the pictures and props she brought in really helped appreciate the life style and showboat importance along the Ohio. Her family started out as immigrants and toured the country selling a magic elixir in a medicine wagon, and went on to boats in later years. After the demise of the showboat industry, JoAleene and family went on to entertain in night clubs throughout the country, and if there is interest, we could have her back for ‘part 2’ for a more in depth discussion of night club history. (we asked, they never performed at the Riviera!)
