LIBRARY TALK – MAY 15, 2025

From the desk of Alison Gibson, Director
As readers of the column will no doubt know, we like postcards! The snapshots of a business, a house, a family, a flood—casual to serious in tone and always, in some way, informational. Not too often do we see a two-picture card, but here we have one. We know, not a scene from Brown County, but close. This was printed for the J. T. Kackley & Co., located in downtown Maysville. Looking at the Maysville papers, this company probably started in 1884 as the successor to Morrison & Kackley at No. 27 East Second Street. Seems an odd combination of pictures, but interesting none the less.
May seems to be pretty good month for new books. This week we are adding to our fiction collection Fever Beach by Carl Hiassen, Where the Rivers Merge by Mary Alice Monroe, Marble Hall Murders by Anthony Horowitz and the Red House by Mary Morris. Two interesting biographies are also being released this week—Ron Chernow(author of biographies on Grant, Washington and Alexander Hamilton) pens Mark Twain, and Dane Huckelbridge explores the Queen of All Mayhem: The blood-soaked life and mysterious death of Belle Starr, the most dangerous woman of the West. Later in the month there is a new Stephen King, Nora Roberts, Dean Koontz, Michael Connelly and many more! Fortunately, reading isn’t dead and we hope that you find some time to escape into reading.
To entice you to spend some time here at the library, a staff member is bringing in her copies of the Sunday New York Times. The news might be over a week old, but the book review, food section, opinion, NYT magazine and lots of special features are timely and great fun to browse and read.
