Higginsport postcards are harder to come by than Ripley cards, so we were excited to add this one to our collection. It was even better than expected with the penciled note on the back, giving it a Ripley connection. (Frankie) Ray Brookbank (1889-1983) spent his life on the river and we’re sure that the Brookbank family could give you lots of details.
Going by his obituary in the Ripley Bee November 3rd, 1983, he was industrious! Helping build sidewalks in Higginsport at age 12, then a year later he was rowing across the river daily to carry the mail and the occasional passenger or two, his love of the river began early and stayed with him. In his youth, he was also part of the Brookbank baseball legend in Higginsport. He was a Master Mason, a Shriner, involved with the OK Warehouse and the Citizen’s Bank of Higginsport.
Warmer weather and longer evening ‘daylight’ makes gardening a possibility after our seemingly longer than usual winter. We’ve heard people already planting peas and other early crops, seeing the daffodils beginning to bloom as well as the onion grass dotting the landscape. So…time to plan for spring and summer veggies and flowers. We have lots of books and pamphlets on different gardening ideas—organic, straw bale, herbs, perennials, edible landscaping and so much more.
Don’t forget to ‘save the date’ for our Jazz Alive event—Sunday, April 13th from 2-4 p.m. Word has it that one of the musicians will be ever popular Josh Strange.
