From the desk of Alison Gibson, Director
We thought this was a sweet and summery picture. The note attached to it states ” ‘The Dairy Bar’ This is on the farm of Joseph A. Richardson on Pisgah Ridge about 1913-14. Mr. Richardson is shown on the left. The two girls on the mare’s back are Martha M. Richardson Leeds and Daisy Margaret Trimble Schroer.”
Next Wednesday, July 10th at 11:00 for the Ripley Summer Reading Program, we will be greeted by Ron Loebker and his stately horse Bedford down along the river near the Lion’s Club shelter. While we know many of ‘our’ kids have seen horses, not all have, and we appreciate Ron’s (and Bedford’s) willingness to visit. Bedford has been ridden into town before, and has even stuck his ‘long face’ into one of the neighborhood bars. Thanks to Tim Wilson for his fun and informative talk about Smokey the Bear and forest fire fighting last week. Kids and adults both enjoyed the presentation.
A shout-out to the Aberdeen Fire Department for attempting to fix the crazy tilting light fixture at the Aberdeen Branch. We really appreciate your help!
Our libraries will be closed on Thursday, July 4th. Happy and safe holiday to all.
FYI, A few weeks ago we posted a postcard of the Russellville High School shortly before it was torn down to be rebuilt. A reader had asked if the new was built over the old, and we couldn’t answer definitively. The Russellville Library just received two booklets as a donation for the local history collection, and we think the question was answered in the RHS Alumni Association 1908-1963 booklet. The school built in 1908-09 didn’t last long–in the 1930s the more modern yellow brick building was built, but it was built around the 1908 building. The 1930s building was found to be inadequate for all classroom needs as well, so a one story frame building commonly known as the Sheep Shed stood for a time behind it to provide the needed space for various classes and band practice! The booklet lists graduates from 1908-1963, the last year for Russellville High School, as in 1964, students started graduating from the Eastern School District, and the high school was in Macon. Very informative booklet. The other donation was the 1992 History of Russellville Ohio for the 175th Anniversary Celebration, a lovely 74 page booklet. Both publications are now located in the Russellville Local History/Reference collection.
