From the desk of Alison Gibson, Director
School’s back in session. Seems like just yesterday we were promoting the beginning of our summer reading programs. We want to thank all the kids (and the parents/grandparents that provided transportation) that participated in our wide-ranging programs this summer—we had fun, we hope that you did as well. Here is a secret–the reading for pleasure and interacting with other kids will help with school. Keeping up the skills of reading, and realizing reading can be for fun (no reports, no testing, no particular AR level…) is one of the best things libraries can support and encourage. While earning the t-shirt and tags for your brag tag collection are easy incentives, the reading skills maintained over the summer months are the true prize—congratulations to everyone that visited their library during the vacation months.
On Thursday, August 25th author Ruth Webster will be at the Russellville Branch Library at 2:00 p.m. to talk about her Civil War novels. Three novels, eight soldiers, all with connections to Brown County and Southern Ohio, and all related to the author. She will share some of the research she did which supplied her with endless opportunities for details and drama, as well as read selections from her fact-based books. She will have the books available for sale day of the talk, and we do own them in our collection.
With Russellville now having the addition, programs can be held, and we look forward to expanding the use of the room. The Russellville library is located at 280 W. Main Street, right across the street from the Russellville Elementary School.
FYI, this week is the Ohio Rural Heritage Festival in downtown Ripley, and we do have some changes in our hours to accommodate the area. Main Street will be closed starting on Thursday at 8:00 am. Ripley Library hours will be Thursday, 10am to 8pm, Friday, closing early 10am-4 pm to make way for the parade, and we will be closed on Saturday. The annex will be open on Saturday from 12-4 for the military showing of pictures and artifacts covering at least 100 years, we welcome you to stop in. Our branches will be open on Saturday 10-2 in case you really need a library fix!
