LIBRARY TALK – NOVEMBER 20, 2019

LIBRARY TALK
From the desk of Alison Gibson, Director

Good grief! Thanksgiving is next week, and December is right around the corner. Our December calendar is filled with activities, and the best way to check up on them is to stop in, check our Facebook or even as you walk or drive by the Ripley library, see what banners are up. December 1st at 2:00 p.m. will be Christmas Memories with 12 songs sung in the style of Rosemary Clooney and Doris Day—the Cincinnati Museum Center will be in the library annex, with singers and background information on these two memorable singers.

Just a few days later, the River Village Christmas tradition starts with the Friday evening ceremony of lighting of the Christmas Tree at 5:30 p.m., immediately followed by singing in the annex by RULH students and the beginning of the Friends of the Library holiday booksale from 6-8:00 p.m. We are pleased to note that the Ohio River Dulcimer group will be serenading the book sale crowd on Friday evening after the singing. The booksale continues Saturday December 8th while the rest of the RVC activities are in progress.

Saturday December 14th at 11:00 a.m. the Friends of the Library are having the Madcap puppets perform their version of A Christmas Carol in the annex—this is geared for children (and kids at heart!) and then December 21st at 11:00 am we will be having a visiting author Robert Hawkins discuss his recently released book titled “A Book of Matches: The Life, Murder and Family of an Appalachian War Veteran”. The family lived in Peebles, so really a local tale that took place in the 1930s and ‘40s. While not a ‘holiday’ type of book, we want to take advantage of Mr. Hawkins visit, and local history is always interesting and a book purchase can make a good last minute gift!

Before all of this December ‘stuff’, the genealogy club will be meeting at the library on this Thursday the 21st at 6;30 p.m., and I’m pleased to report this group is growing and always welcoming new genealogy buffs. We also will be having a ‘make and take’ holiday craft program on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving for kids K-3rd grade at 10:30 a.m. and 4-8th grade at 12:30 p.m. Space is limited, so please call to reserve a spot.
