Two local connection items have been added to the collection, and they show the diversity of what constitutes ‘local’!

First, we’ve added the movie Umbrella Man to the collection.  Filmed in Pittsburgh and Dallas Texas, so what is the local tie? Our own David Gray has a small part in the movie! Watch for the priest near the beginning of the film. Thanks to David for donating the DVD.  Within our collection Mr. Gray is featured in Coal Miner’s Daughter as Doc Turner (1980) through the most current and recently released Umbrella Man (2016)—quite a broad span of time to have roles on the ‘big screen’.

Always looking for local history information and this book does have some ties to the area.

The Midas of Manumission: The Orphan Samuel Gist and His Virginian Slaves by Barb Drummond.  Many of our readers have heard of the Gist Settlements of manumitted slaves in Brown and Highland Counties but probably know little on the Gist name. This book, by English writer Drummond takes a look at the life of Samuel Gist, his rough childhood in England and Virginia and his fortunes made, along with releasing the many slaves he had in the early 1800s.

Don’t forget, next week on Tuesday, October 15th at 7:00 p.m. the GFWC Ripley Women’s Club is sponsoring a Meet the (Mayorial) Candidates Night at the Ripley Library annex.  With 5 candidates to be on the ballot, this is your chance to hear them in person and help you make an informed decision with you go to the polls in November.

FYI, our libraries will be closed on Monday, October 14th in observation of Columbus Day.
