Thanks to the GFWC Ripley Women’s Club for the donation of two books to our children’s collection to honor veterans. Why Did Daddy Have to Leave? Understanding His Special Job in the Military and What is a Veteran Anyway? . Both are written by Robert C. Snyder and illustrated by Ron Himler. As it is not always easy to explain to a child why a parent must leave for an extended period of time, or exactly why it is important that we need a military and have veterans, these two books help illustrate and open dialogue on the subject that can have such a large impact on family life.

Last reminder—we have the Big Foot program this Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the Ripley library annex.  If past interest is any indication, we should have a large and lively crowd!  I am glad we have the annex now for programming, as seating will be much better—last time the Ohio Night Stalkers were here, it was very crowded in the library meeting room.  My understanding that have some new recordings and more information on Buckeye Big Foot sightings. This is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend.

Not too far from the beginning of the Summer Reading Program. A Universe of Stories is the theme, and we’ve been overhauling our collection of books on space, exploration, rockets and more—the last week in May will be our kick-off, with a sign-up ‘party’ at each of our libraries. Look for the details on the flyers we are sending home with your kids. We will be having lots of fun with programs filled with stories and crafts, and even having Jim Kleefeld and his Outer Space Magic show on Wednesday, June 12th for silly fun. Yes, continuing to read throughout the summer is very important, but we want it to be enjoyable—no tests, no essays, no AR points—just pick out what you and your child want to read.

As fast as this month is flying by, it probably isn’t too early to let you know that the Ripley Friends of the Library will be having their summer book sale on Saturday June 8th, probably 10-4.   We have, since the last book sale, received a good number of very nice books—an infusion of cookbooks which always sell well, in addition  some fine fiction, biographies and big boxes I haven’t even opened yet, so hoping for great books for summer reading, adding to the collection as well as those interesting collectible titles that you just never know when they will appear.  More details to come!
