Library Talk, June 1st, 2017
School’s out, Summer Reading Program about to begin! Sign-up starts at Aberdeen Branch on Tuesday, May 30th, and Monday, June 5th for Russellville and Ripley. Reading is so important to keep doing over the summer for students, but we want it to be fun—no reports, no testing, just reading for enjoyment. Kids ages 3-11 are invited to weekly programs of crafts, kids 12-16 are encouraged to read with surprise incentives along the way. Call or stop in to your branch to find the details. Additional scheduling and information is on our website www.ripleylibrary.com and our Facebook at www.facebook.com/ripleyohiolibrary
While we are sure to put the computer class schedules on our Facebook and website, I think it is easy to forget, or not be aware of, this type of service we provide, so this week’s column is a reminder. We often have free hour long classes at Aberdeen on Tuesday afternoons starting at 2:00 p.m. and June this year has 5 Tuesdays! Here is the rundown–
- June 1 :Windows: Getting Started on the Computer,
- June 8: MS Word (toolbars, spelling and grammar check, inserting pictures and clip art into a document)
- June 15 Microsoft Excel: Making a check-book register with Excel to learn some of the basics of Excel,
- June 22 Internet: Basics and Safety-searching, avoiding scams, pop-ups and more and finally, June 29 Question and Answer: Bring in your basic computer, tablet, and phone questions, and we will find the answers. Call Aberdeen Branch at 795-2534 if you have questions.
At Ripley, we offer sign-up for one-on-one on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and some Saturdays. Can’t get your Kindle to download books? Your smartphone acting weird? Your laptop arguing with you? Or you just want to sit down and talk tech, Ripley has you covered. Call Ripley to schedule an appointment at 392-4871
Russellville also has an AmeriCorps/Guiding Ohioans Online person in just about every week to work with you one-on-one either on Monday or Wednesday in the afternoon. Her time slots fill up, so if Russellville is a good location for you, I would call the Russellville to see what is available. 377-2700.
There are no ‘stupid’ computer questions, and if you need help, the library can often be the place to find the answer, and we hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to use ‘your’ resources.
Very last minute reminder for Essential Oils program at the Russellville Library on June 1st at 6:30-7:30 p.m., as well as the BIG book sale in the Ripley Library annex this Saturday, June 3rd from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The donations keep pouring in, and the Friends are going to really go all out to sort and make it easier for you to find the treasures you are looking for.
