Library Talk September 21, 2017

The Ripley Friends of the Library had a successful fish fry and silent auction this past Saturday, and it was due to the work and dedication of many.  From the many artists that took their time to craft an amazing collection of diverse birdhouses, to all of the bakers that brought decadent desserts, to the volunteers that gave their time to help set up, take down, clean up and make it look easy, we were able to put together a fun and fund-raising event. A special thanks to Ben Pedigo who, after a long day of performing elsewhere, still took the time to play his banjo and guitar to entertain the many diners with his special and wonderful music. Thanks Ben.  We also thank Greg Gilbert, who’s secret coating and skilled cooking techniques made the best fish!  Our big lesson this year is to order more fish than we thought we needed, and we apologize for running out of the delicious dish.   Of course, our big thanks to all that came to join us for dinner as well as the generous bids on all of the birdhouses.   The money raised this past Saturday will be used by the Friends to help out the library, and I think that some of the funds will be used for some special programs.

Last week was also the return of the Ripley River Jam, and it was magical.  Eleven musicians from all over came together to play and delight the audience—when the jam is going on, it is one of the best uses of our annex with the room to spread out and have lots of fun. Thanks to Harry Pedigo for contacting fellow musicians as well as masterfully directing the jam so everyone had a chance to shine. Lesson learned at the jam in a larger room, we need to get our audio equipment up and going—we promise to be tinkering with it before the next jam.  We hope to have one or two more this year, but the dates are not yet set—stay tuned!

While the Bengals haven’t started out the season as well as fans would like, we still can hope for a good year, and we know there are lots of fans around.  So, in the spirit of fall, football and hope, the Friends of the Library have put together a fun Bengals themed drawing.  All you have to do is check out 10 items to get a ticket (at least 3 of the items have to be books!).  The drawing will be on October 21st, during the National Friends of the Library Week.  So, if you want a chance to win a NFL approved Bengals chair, cooler, picture, fidget spinner, blanket/throw and more, stop in and check out some of our stuff.  Good luck!
