Library Talk – August 17, 2017

Library Talk, August 17, 2017

School is back. Seems as if we were just promoting the beginning of the Summer Reading Program and getting kids to stay in touch with reading and the library. If your child didn’t finish filling out the reading log to earn a t-shirt, we still have some left, and will honor the filled-out log through September with the supplies of t-shirts we still have.  Normally, we ‘close’ the doors when school starts, but our t-shirts were late in arriving, and we don’t want anyone to miss out if they are close to earning one of our ‘custom’ t-shirts!

During the last week, we’ve seen a significant increase in books requested from teachers, especially in the picture book/early reader area. How can we tell? Hmm, years of experience tell us the topics that will be most likely requested!  Books on ‘first day of school’, apples, fall season, alphabet books, art, explorers and much more.  Many of the books are leaving the library and traveling around the state to teachers from far away school districts—we are glad to help, but we’d really like to help our local teachers first.  We can provide multiple copies of single title books, books on a given subject, or even mixed boxes of books of a specific accelerated reader (AR) level.  Let us know how we can help you—we want to be able to provide you with the extra tools that make your so very important job a little easier.

Final reminder:  This Saturday, August 19th from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Ripley library annex we will be hosting a program by Justin Brown on the science and art of proving the existence of spirits. Justin will talk about the equipment and methods of trying to scientifically prove (or disprove) the presence of spirits or ghosts. He will be bringing some of his equipment to display, talk about techniques and his experiences. His latest project has been the Higginsport School, and the second half of the program will be the premier showing of his results on DVD—so, is Higginsport School haunted??  We are really pleased that our annex is available for programs now—the spacious interior allows for many more people to sit comfortably, as well as allowing us to set up multiple tables for the display.
